Universal Right to Consciousness

Specialized higher education must be universally accessible.

When humans evolved from being hunters to farmers, information on the techniques of farming spread largely through word of mouth. Once the population that knew about farming reached a critical mass, humankind took the next step in evolution.

At this point in our evolution, we are faced with information explosion in numerous fields. Information in itself is useless. It is when information is assimilated by thinkers, that information is transformed into knowledge. When knowledge in multiple subjects converge symbiotically, wisdom emerges. When wisdom is kindled into action, consciousness upgrades.

To make this assimilation of information and its transformation into knowledge possible, humanity has for ages depended on universities and organizations of higher education. Restricting this process through the imposition of any arbitrary condition is deleterious to human evolution.

Just as disease is not restricted by economic boundaries, the intellectual ability to imbibe information and transform it into knowledge is not limited to the affluent. Therefore restricting higher education to those who can afford it, is depriving humanity of minds that will lead us on to the the next stage of our evolution.

If the pursuit of happiness is a basic human right, so should be the pursuit of knowledge. Imposing economic criteria to artifically segregate the global population may serve the interests of a few for a short time, but will be catastrophic for humanity in the long run.

Not only will commodifying and commercializing information and knowledge slow our evolutionary progress, it will create a socio-political chasm so large that it will only be resolved by war or mass extinction. Bigotry, fascism, and all forms of autocratic plutocracies will reign supreme if higher education is compartmentalized based on affluence.

We have the power to prevent such dire consequences. Particularly, the development of the world wide web has presented a common platform where limitless information can be shared instantaneously. No longer do students need to stall their lives and shun their responsibilities to devote themselves solely to acquiring information and knowledge. Acquiring…
