What is Golden?

Golden is the first financial assistant for taking care of your parents — pay bills, find benefits, reduce expenses — secure and increase their income an average of 20%. Golden is the first product to win AARP’s Financial Innovation Award.

Why was it important to start this business?

It’s important because we’re going to be caring for a billion people, our parents in the next 15 years. 74% of our seniors are financially vulnerable. 14% will outlive their money. As our parents took care of us, Golden gives us a chance to take care of them and assure their financial security.

What’s the dream for your business?

The dream is the same as our goal, and that is that the average senior is living on $31,500 a year. Golden’s goal is to increase that income and benefits by about 10–20% so that our seniors, our parents, don’t have to make a choice between food and medicine, housing and healthcare.

Where do you find your inspiration?

By taking care of my own parents which is how Golden started. Dad forgot to pay his mortgage and realized he could have lost his home and he and I wouldn’t have even known it. So I draw my inspiration for taking care of them and realizing that we can scale this to millions of people so we can take care of all of our families.

Why are you an entrepreneur?

I love being an entrepreneur. This is my fourth company. It’s an opportunity to take an idea and turn it into a business, and I think business is the most powerful tool for change in this world. So being an entrepreneur is getting your hands on that tool and making a tremendous change in this world.

The Milestone Makers program is designed to help early-to-mid-stage founders set, hit, and celebrate milestones critical to company growth over 12 weeks. Each of our 11 Milestone Makers selected into the Fall 2017 cohort receive the support of a personal business coach, a team of mentors, peer cohort work sessions, as well as curated classes to help them reach their goals.
