First Impressions

Looking around at the devices that surround us in the modern world, it seems like the future envisioned by sci-fi fanatics of the 2000’s is quickly approaching. Robots can perform surgery, cars can drive themselves, and I can have paper towels delivered to my home by politely asking the blue disk on my desk. Technology is becoming increasingly embedded into modern life, and the process is both exciting and fascinating.

The Human-Robot Interaction course is already living up to the high expectation that comes with the subject matter. As a senior in the engineering program, it seems like the higher level EECS classes of the past few years have generally been homework or lab intensive courses with all discussion generally being questions about the highly technical material. I always enjoyed the discussion based learning dynamic of my earlier elective courses in philosophy and humanities, so now I’m thrilled to be in an EECS class with so much engaging and thought-provoking discussion.

It was so interesting to take another look at a movie I hadn’t seen in over a decade, and to really think about the dynamic on screen. Sonny seems so human in this move to both the characters and the audience, and it seems like his apparent ability to form his own opinions and motivations is a big component of this. You can see how interested he is in becoming more naturally social, and his emotion is so clear as he struggles to relay his own humanness to a real human. I’m excited the discussion quickly led to a variety of observations and stimulating debates, and look forward to seeing how class opinions and comments change as we all move further into the semester.
