Intro to Adobe Illustrator

Today I wanted to introduce one of my favorite programs, Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to just share a brief overview and intro to the program. Here’s my Intro to Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator is a vector design program. Vector images are different than rasterized images because vector images can be scaled up and down with no loss of quality. Rasterized images are made of pixels, so they appear pixelated when you zoom in.

I personally use Illustrator for many different reasons, but you should specifically use Illustrator when designing objects that need to be used at different sizes. Logos, website extras like icons and business collateral like business cards, stationery, and social media image templates, can all be designed in Adobe Illustrator.

This is the new document dialogue. You can choose from several categories of templates at the top, or create your own to the right. Choose your width and length and the measurement unit. The most common for Illustrator will be pixels or inches. You can select the number of artboards as well. Lastly, you can choose the bleed on all edges. In the advanced settings, you can change the color profile, the PPI and the preview mode.

Some of the most important and valuable tools in illustrator are the pen tool, the shape, and the shape builder tool. I find myself using those three tools the most often. The pen tool allows you to create an unlimited number of shapes and designs with the click of your mouse. The shape tool allows you to create basic shapes like squares, circles, and stars, and then the shape builder can be used to combine them, subtract them, etc.
