Why Data Science

Data and technology are changing how companies do business, and in turn changing the ways we live in cities as residents, citizens, and consumers. My time in Tech has taught me to take use an analytical approach toward solving problems, and I made the transition towards applying these skills in working on the problems facing public life in urban environments.

My career journey has not been as linear as I anticipated. I’ve come to understand myself as someone who thrives on continual self-improvement, always reevaluating my current position in relation to the goals I’ve set for my future.

In 2019, I found myself immersed in the fast paced work life of the American start-up environment. My role was in Customer Success, and I spent seemingly endless hours every week directly engaging with clients. Long work hours, constantly shifting performance metrics and initiatives, bean bag chairs and a seemingly endless supply of office beer were the realities I lived. I found myself wanting more for myself, and wanting to contribute more to the world around me.

Technology and gadgetry have also always been of great interest to me. As an avid PC builder-enthusiast, my familiarity with computing hardware naturally led towards an interest in software. A few years ago, that interest led me towards basic scripting and terminal based programs and games using JavaScript.

Looking to take my programming knowledge to the next level, I took a certificate course for Programming with Python with Codecademy. This course was a self-paced introduction into a versatile and widely used programming language used in many different way.

I went to GA because of the reputation of their immersive programs for providing a thorough education for becoming “career ready” in a relatively short timeline. I wanted to push myself to dive head first into something new, and GA was the perfect fit for me to take that leap.Cities are growing, and the problems that growth creates is growing with them. I’ve chosen to dedicate my time and energy to learn how I can help transform the urban environment to help build better places to live that can accommodate density and diversity.

Data science, and being a part of a movement of evidence-based decisions making in public policy, is how I’ve chosen to be a part of the future I wish to create.
