Traditional Midwives

Midwives services include annual gynecological exams, family planning, and preconception care, prenatal care, labor and delivery support, newborn care, and menopausal management. Since pregnancy and labour are physiological life events for the majority of childbearing women, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) advocates for normal childbirth. Midwives are regarded as trained and respected experts in certain communities, but low-caste menial workers in others, whose main duty it is to clean up the “dirt” of birth.

Gulshan Appa, a 60-year-old midwife in district Abbottabad KPK, Pakistan has worked as a midwife for more than 40 years. She is regarded as the district’s most seasoned midwife having completed about 1000 successful cases so far. We questioned her about the traditional midwifery practices that helped thousands of women conceive after doctors had told them they were infertile, how they provide antenatal care for normal childbirth that reduce the likelihood of C-sections, and how they provide postpartum care by using conventional maternal care techniques.
