Shit WorkDay

Today was just pure shit. It might be pure shit for a few days to weeks. Maybe it won’t be so bad when we get used to it. Being down a key man makes life hard. I hope experience and perseverance…

Brainstorm

Individual Idea Generation

How might we help small groups of people travel together more easily.

New Warm-Up Game

My new warm up game is called quick thinking. Like the games played in class this works best with everyone sitting in a circle. One person starts the game by saying any word they want. The next person (clockwise) must say any word that also starts with the same letter as the other person. Play continues around the circle until someone hesitates for more than two seconds. If this happens the person is eliminated and the next person keeps it going. The game ends when only one person is left. To add more complexity, once per game each person may say a synonym to the previous word if you get stuck or to trip up the next person by changing the first letter they must respond with.

Session Organization

For my group brainstorming I gathered a total of five students from Comstock Hall. Will is in Carlson and a member of Design U. Mari is studying anthropology and has enough credits to be considered a junior. Eric is also a Carlson student who is majoring in finance. Patrick is my roommate and is currently taking a similar class for a graphic design. Lastly, Cole is in CLA and is planning on transferring into CSE. This is a diverse group of academic students that should bring forth a variety of ideas.

We started the group brainstorm in Will’s dorm room by playing some warm-up games. We started with Zip, Zap, Zop, and the say something related and unrelated games. We ended the warm-ups by playing my new quick thinking game. We went through about 4 rounds of it and was surprisingly very competitive and difficult. When you are put on the spot it is really hard to think of even the most basic things and a lot of times someone would get out almost immediately.

For the actual idea generation we moved into an open lounge within Comstock Hall. We rearranged the furniture, bunching up tables and chairs to face an open wall. The idea generation period lasted for around 30 minutes.

Problems with Group brainstorming

Throughout the brainstorming process I ran into a lot of issues that resulted in a less than satisfactory result. I kept my HMW statement relatively broad to help get as many ideas out there. However, even after 30 minutes there were only 47 new ideas posted that were not mine. This is mostly because it hard to get my group to fully take the brainstorming seriously. They often got lost in lengthy conversations about an idea or something unrelated to what I was trying to achieve. Even with constant reminders they still posted several ideas that were not fully thought out or really do not make any sense.

Sorting and Voting

For sorting the ideas I chose to do something pretty similar to our practice brainstorm in class. Everyone had to mark 3 different ideas with a star to represent what they thought was most creative. After that they marked 3 different ideas with a check to represent which ideas they would be most likely to use. I thought this was a good balance to gauge uniqueness and practicality.

After everyone marked all their stars and checks we moved all of the ideas that had at least one symbol to the other side of the wall. Then we moved them in order of how many marks they had, left being the least and right being the most.

To end the brainstorming session we took down all of the post its and index cards and began to categorize them on the floor since they did not stick to the wall very well. We came up with 8 different categories of ideas, each with at least five different things in them. The final categories were Sound, Digital, Kids, Shoes, Vehicles, Navigation, Tracking, and Wearable.
