About Hive

What is hive?

Hive is a data warehouse software built on top of Hadoop for providing data query and analysis. Hive gives an SQL like interface to query data stored in various databases and file systems that integrate with Hadoop. It provides massive scale out and fault tolerance capabilities for data storage and processing on commodity hardware.

It provides a SQL like query language called HIVEQL with schema on read and transparently converts queries to MApReduce.

HiveQl:

Hive Query Language (HiveQL) is a query language in Hive for processing and analyzing structured data. It separates users from the complexity of Map Reduce programming. It reuses common concepts from relational databases, such as tables, rows, columns, and schema, to ease learning.

Metastore:

Metastore is the central repository of Hive metadata. It stores metadata for Hive tables (like their schema and location) and partitions in a relational database.
