The CTO role in Digital Transformation strategies

For this writing specifically, we need to make some facts about technology (software) before getting into definitions and roles.

We need to say that the Internet is a concrete follow-up option for companies today because the penetration and usage worldwide and of course in a business direction is pretty comfortable and diverse on the ways that business is actually done right now.

It’s not only about adopting tech or digital solutions for business, is about thinking and setting a digital mindset for business.

It goes way more than implementing software, I mean, in software companies (for this example) the user demands more attention every day, they are the foundations for any business at all. In other perspectives, the company (or Internet service) needs to change a little bit their organizational structure and their working culture to finally generate a successful balance between internal process management and user-demanded features and software releases.

We are going to talk more about the CTO role in the next chapter, but here’s a quick summary of what this person should do for driving the company into a DTS (Digital Transformation Strategy).

Today:

In the paper, it looks very promising, but it’s not always roses. It’s true that there’s a lot of factors that can or cannot make this happen, things like tech misunderstanding, law impositions, and of course the financial health of the company.

It’s not about setting up a new tech feature or process, is all about making the easier way possible for people to understand this new DTS process and how it can make it successful. For companies, this has to be a first-class goal for digitalization and business areas. Also, we have to evaluate if we can count on the staff and directives for adopting these tech changes, and may sound obvious but this is not only a tech area responsibility, the change needs to be on all the departments of it.

For this chapter, we are going to review what are the follow-up “rules” to set a DTS properly. Focusing on a general POV for companies. Most of it can be optional but it’s recommended to take action on every single aspect of it.

All the areas (or departments) in a company must communicate and work collaboratively. We need to have more than one “way” for communication, placing the customer in the center of everything as the priority element of all. The main goal is to give the best customer experience possible.

We cannot dismiss the internal communication between all sectors (product team, management, marketing, IT, etc) as a full block, they will need to generate strong relations for creating the best and new products and services using tech strategies.

For creating disruptive changes, the company or project need to think of a mass adoption strategy as a mantra for getting clients. That without a doubt is the key point for DTS’s today. Getting the first idea back, a business must have multiple ways of interacting with possible customers (omnichannel company).

There’s an element on this part called Client Journey that represents the way that the client use to interact (in any form) with an organization. This will lead to the creation of a customer database within their whole platform, that can conduct a business relation sometime after this.

Also, they need to make things easier for the customers, if it’s difficult to use, you will lose a client. For DTS you have to conclude that users are everything and time is gold.

It’s pretty common the usage of Bots in here for creating positive impact relations and conduct very fast sales conversions.

For this element, we need to check if software adoption could be a key part of changing the business model in a successful way.

Take a moment to think about this example of Digital Transformation Strategy in the music industry.

The music industry depends on software all the time, the software adoption completely changed the game for this.

Companies, in order to survive, have to question themselves if software or IoT setups can provide effective business solutions

This is pretty simple

Since the “cloud” adoption became viral and disruptive. Providers and the tech world have things a little bit more friendly to entrepreneurs and software developers around the world. There’s a not-so-new term that can specify what kind of solutions can be done from the IT approach in an easy way.

The software product life cycle is actually very fast nowadays, now we have to deliver a new version and quality features the fastest way possible for staying relevant to the tech industry.

It’s common the usage of Agile Methodologies, with the Scrum Framework to plan the construction of the software based on sprints and meetings with the stakeholder in order to give value to software constantly to become the most-used or the let die kind of project. This will lead to acquiring early feedback and versatility on continuous improvements.

And Finally.

SLA (Service Level Agreement)

We cannot forget about legal terms.

This is a document that sets up agreements between providers and stakeholders. We discuss terms, guaranties, times, costs, and formal actions for making things clear for everybody.

This is pretty interesting, we talked about what do-to for achieving a successful adoption of technology in a company. But you may ask when the time is right for this?. Sometimes this could be a natural turn of events but sometimes can lead to a complete change of the actual business model or worst, a bankruptcy.

I will explain this with an example, without providing companies' names. Pivoting options at their finest.

A tourism company: from selling plane tickets to a full tourism platform services

Sometimes threading startups with talent and luck can be a direct competitor to big companies

Big companies buy small ones to incorporate their ops strategically to the principal. This can expand the business capabilities, add tech, collaborators, patents, and tons of assets for making things better. Companies like MercadoLibre, the leading E-commerce platform in Latin America, in order to expand, buy whole companies, absorbing tech teams trying to speed up hiring processes.

Simple: The Big Fish eats the small one

To accomplish better goals or a simple Digital Transformation adoption. Startups and entrepreneurs make alliances for win-win relations for the sake of technology.

Sometimes the big help for startups arrives from big companies, incubators, or accelerators companies. This kind of company makes agreements to evaluate, monitor, and help in developing the startup for possible later acquisitions.

Companies like: 500Startups, YCombinator, and Wayra specialize in these activities mentioned before.

Finally. Let’s talk about this particular role, I consider this role as the creators of the future.

The tech changes are fast, real fast. If we consume technology, we cannot have pretty much control of what’s going on, but if we create the technology we can have the feeling that the changes are under control (surely don’t). In other aspects, the inversion goes toe-to-toe with the recent tech releases.

This is not only a coding role.

A CTO must.

In order to accomplish any tech Goal, the CTO should be the CEO’s counselor on how to affront and make decisions in business terms.

Things like finding better tech internal alternatives, tech support, research, budgets reductions can make the difference for companies' projections.

Also, this role needs to lead on:

Decision Making

In aspects like:

Sponsors and Agents

On making decisions that motivate the whole organization and changing the perception of the stakeholders.

It’s very common forms AD HOC groups and committees on certain internal areas for Events or meetups.

Talent Developers

In internal training sessions for everybody. Things like workshops, conferences, Mentorship guidances, and more.

Business Developers

On transforming digital companies. The CTO must know how to place a mindset on the integration of new ways of business, manage and calculate risk assumptions, and of course, being the first (and main) tech consultant of the organization.
