Minimising Your Share Of Food Waste
In a world where the present focus lies on significantly improving environmental conditions around us, every little action makes a difference. If we look around us, all the waste we discard contributes to various changes in the environment. Whether it’s single-use plastic, paper, or even wastage through food, they all have different impacts. While we can reduce the damage of single-use plastic by taking up practices to eliminate them or recycling more paper instead of tossing them, how do we reduce the damage from food waste?
Food waste can arise in numerous ways. It could be through ingredients discarded because they do not meet consumption standards, food that goes bad, or food humans willingly throw away. Degrading food waste emits methane, a greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. It also adds to the wastage of water and other natural resources that went into the food production process. Food wastage takes place on all levels — production, retail, and individual. It is challenging to make changes at a broad level, such as retail. But individually, we can do our part and minimise food waste coming out of our homes.
It’s easy to sit back and enjoy the food that comes our way, but as harsh as it sounds, it shouldn’t come at the cost of the environment. Being mindful about our practices with food seems like a small step. But one needs to start somewhere to make change possible. And if we all incorporate mindful practices into our daily lives, we can collectively help improve environmental conditions in the long run.
