Sketch of Dignity

I just heard that Justice Breyer, Supreme Court, is about to announce his retirement. I was halfway through writing this when I heard. How odd.

If I could sketch a portrait of a person, in words alone, the person America needs right now, he or she would have to be the most remarkable person I’ve ever known.

This person would have a profound influence over the politics of this country and be respected in other democracies around the world.

Were my sketch were that of a man, he wouldn’t be a tall man, short, thickset, Churchillian, a sturdy body on sturdy legs, in his sixties. His entire body radiating force and energy. I’d give him humorous eyes, yet ready at any moment to flash with anger, the anger of a prizefighter.

Sketching a woman, she would have great personal strength, a gift to sleep regardless of the importance of matters at hand, have a business background, hands carefully attended to, and small shapely feet.

Money for its own sake would have little attraction, but acquisitiveness would be a deeper passion. She has stature, nobleness, a genius for organization, and mental qualities that are equally demanding and unusual. She loves to think on a wider scale and will not accept defeat easily if she believes her decision is the right course of action.

Her carried confidence prevents her from rushing, knowing the time is not that she rises to the quest, but that the chosen must.

This person would be restlessly active, constantly on the move having reached one goal. This person, while generous with praise, will have a cruel streak in his or her nature.

Someone who can wound yet is sensitive to criticism. If a man, he is blessed with a personality that is the living power of his faith.

A man who understands the object of adversity doesn’t crumble but allows it to bring about the elements of his greatness. Such a man understands the swift changes of fortune, prepared to make heroic decisions and risk failing, and winning accepts with a quiet dignity.

The subject being a woman will be a scientific inquirer, ready to combat the coldness of male air in the room.
