Giancarlo Stanton continued his hot hitting on Wednesday evening

The Yankees beat the Pirates 6–5 on Wednesday in a rare spring training night game on a bases loaded walk in the 8th inning.

Domingo Germán’s started the game for the Yankees and he pitched three innings while allowing one hits, striking out three and allowing zero walks. He threw 24 of his 31 pitches for strikes. He had another very effective spring training game and has now not allowed a run in 5.0 innings (two games).

However, it does seem like Deivi Garcia should be the number five starter in the rotation because he has earned the spot as well and German did disgusting acts when he beat up his girlfriend multiple times at CC Sabathia’s function and then again when they got home back in 2019.

However, it does appear that German has the most upside for the №5 starter spot based on what he did in 2019 when he had a 4.03 ERA in 27 games (24 starts) with 153 strikeouts in 143 innings. It seems like the Yankees are going to keep sending him out to the mound as long as he is pitching well.

In spring training, Stanton, who changed his conditioning in the offseason in an effort to stay healthy the whole season, is hitting .300 with a homer, two doubles and three RBI. He is 3–10 but has hit many balls very hard.

Aroldis Chapman threw his splitter about four times and worked on it a lot in the winter and during spring training. He has been trying to develop more secondary pitches as he is losing some velocity. The splitter can help him stay dominant as his career advances. He appeared in his first spring training game and his splitter looked good in his inning pitched in the fourth inning when he struck out two and did not allow a hit.

Britton will have no throwing for several weeks and then will have a build up. He will have to quarantine for a few days before having the surgery. Boone did say an advantage could be that Britton could will be fresher the second half of the season after missing the first few months than he would have been otherwise.

Justin Wilson came in to pitch the sixth inning and did not have positive results. Wilson will be a valuable and important part of the bullpen especially with Zack Britton on the injured list for the first few months, but Wednesday was not his night.

Wilson gave up a homer that went just over the wall to Pirates center fielder Jared Oliva in the sixth inning for the Pirates first run. Later in that same inning, Wilson gave up a grand slam to Pirates outfielder Brian Goodwin to tie the game at five. Brett Gardner was bad luck because all of those runs came while he was talking to Ryan Ruocco and David Cone during the broadcast.

Chad Green struck out the side on 14 pitches in the 7th inning as he could be the closer for the first game of the season with Chapman suspended. Green struck out the 3rd batter on an excellent curve.

Tyler Anderson pitched to begin the game for the Pirates and what was notable about him was that he grunted when he pitched much more than most pitchers. Michael King threw two scoreless innings to close out the game and got the last hitter of the game to make soft contact that he fielded and threw to first.
