Connecting Methods Through Narrative

Royal College of Art, November 5–8th, 2019

We hosted a week-long workshop during the frame of AcrossRCA, in which participants were introduced to cross-disciplinary mindsets and methods through a collaborative analysis of methods and creative processes through personal narratives. They were challenged to approach the process critically through exploring narratives of method and connection individually, discovering intersections and overlaps between them. This became part of a holistic process of creating a small publication. Skills such as illustration, mapping, research tactics, and book binding were implemented in order to achieve the group goal of holding a book launch on the final day, which represented the commonality and diversity of method that is constant throughout all design professions and the way we practice.

Our guest Finlay Taylor, from the School of Arts & Humanities, shared with us notions of what an artist book is, and guided a rich conversation about the possibilities and features of a book in order to address an audience.

His piece acted as an organic flow of visual and auditory performance, combining the mediums of the search engine and streaming video. The discussion of his work after the performance seemed to lead to a discussion that seemed to carry, together with the publication themes of cross-disciplinarity, medium, translation, and even spirituality.

Conversation was a constant thread binding each workshop and day together.
