Decency and competence return to the White House

The bar could not be set lower. It’s not like newly inaugurated 46th President of the United States of America Joe Biden is following an All-Star. This isn’t the New England Patriots trying to replace Tom Brady. Not at all.

It’s not a bad time to be the new guy. For now.

Joe Biden could literally shoot someone on Fifth Avenue in New York City and still be better than his predecessor by orders of magnitude. Shoot, we could limit this comparison to just Trump’s last two weeks in office and Biden still comes out as far less lethal than Donald Trump.

It won’t be hard for Biden to do better than Trump. Serial killers are less deadly than Trump was. And may still be.

While President Biden will inevitably compare favorably to Trump in the present and the annals of history, his tasks as president are monumentally difficult. The damage done to America from within and the damage done to America’s standing in the world through the sheer mendacity and incompetence of the Trump administration continue to boil.

Trump and his acolytes — thankfully, growing fewer of recent — still pose a grave threat to our hopes for a civil nation, a competent government and equity for more Americans — not just the protected, entitled few. Trump will continue to activate his base. The MAGAts aching for a fight are still there, convinced their lying, egomaniacal leader, who never actually gave two shits about them, was robbed of an election win. And they remain as ludicrously aggrieved on his behalf as ever. Many of them are getting or have been arrested over the past two weeks. It remains to be seen how much of a deterrent that will be to them.

You cannot fix stupid. You especially cannot fix mass-transmitted echo chamber disinformation Trump stupid, as we have seen play out time and again over the past four-plus years. Sorry, Joe.
