Three Words Writing Challenge

Those familiar with the rolling hills of San Franciso will be familiar with the iconic fire nozzle atop Telegraph Hill. Easily sighted from both bridges, it caps the central high point of the peninsula. Most of the time we recognize it along with the Transamerica Pyramid as a visual shorthand for Baghdad by the Bay. Up close there are other dimensions to this fireman’s memorial.

Getting there can be a challenge, yes, there are parking spaces but like most spots in S.F., those were filled in 1951 and haven’t seen the light of day since. The silver lining is being forced to walk the steep side streets until they turn into staircases winding up the face of the rock.

In 1981 the hill was included in a date with Becky that started at Fisherman’s Wharf gawking at street performers. Robin Williams was already on the third season of Mork and Mindy, so I am sure the mime we watched that day was not him.

Now, before your imagination wanders off the page, this was not the romantic adventure that ends with happily ever after. We were agreeable travelers from out of town but we were far more taken with the City by the Bay than by each other.

After the requisite fish dinner, we walked through the quaint and narrow streets of North Beach ending with a vista at the railing where a quarter could buy three minutes of magnified viewing. I did not have any quarters on me but I did bring my father’s binoculars with me.

The tower itself is rather plain, built in the Deco style in unpainted concrete. However, it seems to be an appropriate and fireproof monument to the firefighters that went to the extremes of using dynamite to battle the blazes of 1906.
